With the Punjab State Ministerial Services Union (PSMSU) getting no response from the government over their demands, the PSMSU on Monday decided to extend its ongoing strike till December 15.

The union, comprising more than 50,000 employees from nearly 52 government departments, has been on strike since November 8 which (stir) has hit public service hard.

“In a state body meeting of PSMSU on Monday evening, it was decided to observe a pen-down and computer shutdown strike on December 12 and 13, while all PSMSU members will go on mass leave on December 14 and 15.On December 16 (Saturday), our state body will again meet to decide the future course of action,” said PSMSU president Amrik Singh Sandhu while talking to The Indian Express.

“We launched the strike on November 8 but only after sending 3-4 written communications to the chief minister intimating him about our demands and the proposed stir. It shows the callous attitude of the government towards us. It’s not even bothered to lend an ear to us. Since the day we went on strike, we had only one meeting with a panel of ministers and that was on December 4. As the talks with the government panel were not fruitful, we had no choice but to continue with our agitation,” he added.

The employees are seeking implementation of old pension scheme (OPS) as announced by the AAP government on October 22, 2022, and further notified on November 18, 2022. They are also seeking release of pending installments of dearness allowance (DA) and making it on a par with the central government. “The central government DA is 46%, while that of state government is just 34%,” said PSMSU general secretary Pipal Singh. Employees are also demanding pending promotions in different departments, among other demands.

Festive offer

Information revealed that salaries of most of the government departments have already been disbursed but without the hard copy of the salary slips. “Salaries are being disbursed to employees by the independent efforts of deputy commissioners, sub-divisional magistrates and other officers who are not on strike,” said a government officer on the condition of anonymity. Many of the employees on strike have also got their salary, sources said.

The clerical staff of deputy commissioners’ office, PWD, irrigation, agriculture, electricity board, water and sewerage board, education, and many other departments have been on strike since November 8. The strike has taken a toll on public service, especially causing lot of inconvenience to the general public visiting the revenue department. However, many of the services are being provided through sewa kendras, which are open.
