The city traffic police department is set to launch a new AI (Artificial Intelligence)-backed traffic management app to effectively monitor, manage and strategise ways to decongest traffic in Bengaluru, especially in the major chokepoints. According to traffic police sources, the app is likely to be launched on December 20.

The app, which is yet to be named, is already being used by the traffic police department on a pilot basis. The app is an amalgamation of different digital technologies integrated into one to understand and analyse the traffic movements in Bengaluru. As part of the pilot phase, the traffic department is gathering inputs on vehicular movements, speed, length of traffic, vehicle categories, chokepoints among other data from third party agencies like aggregator apps, mobility-related websites, Google and other platforms.

Department officials said the data is later fed into the app which using AI then intelligently suggests trends in traffic movement which will further help traffic cops to take data-driven decisions.

DCP Traffic (South), Shivaprakash Devaraj speaking to Indian Express said, “We are now gathering data from different sources and simulating them into the app. With this, the app gives us clarity on congestions, length of traffic, average speed, high density corridors, among others. For example, the stretch near Ecospace in Bellandur, showed us that traffic length was recorded at 2km with nearly 2 lakh vehicles on the road, on an average in a given hour. However, the same stretch recorded over 3 lakh vehicles during peak hour.”

The traffic police department is feeding in data of different traffic junctions including the highly congested ones like Outer Ring Road, Old Madras Road, Hosur Road, Tumkur Road, Bannerghatta Road, Bellary Road among others.

Festive offer

As part of predictive analytics and advanced alerts mechanism, the app will also issue alternative routes and response plans based on the data fed into the system. The app will produce intelligently driven solutions to the traffic department in case of waterlogging, potholes, road blockage, events among others.

Police officials mentioned that, with the annual maintenance contract ending between the traffic police department and BOSCH over the maintenance of traffic cameras on December 31, the department will now migrate to the feed and gather visuals from the cameras installed as part of the Safe City Project.
