Telangana got its first Congress Chief Minister on Thursday as A Revanth Reddy took oath at the L B Stadium in Hyderabad. MLA Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka was sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister, creating history as the first Dalit person to occupy the post.
Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan administered the oath of office and secrecy, and the event was attended by All India Congress Committee president Mallikarjun Kharge, senior Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
Here’s a full list of ministers sworn into the new Cabinet:
- Revanth Reddy: The newly sworn-in Chief Minister is an orator largely in the mould of old politicians, mixing eloquence with emotions and direct attacks to connect to the audience, writes Sreenivas Janyala in his profile on Reddy. Did you know that the 54-year-old started his political journey as an ABVP leader before joining the TDP, and later, the Congress?
- Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka: The current Deputy Chief Minister was the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader in the previous Telangana Assembly, and one of the most prominent faces in the Congress campaign. His padayatra or ‘People’s March’ is widely credited, among other factors, with ensuring the Congress’s resurgence leading to its return to power in the state.
- N Uttam Kumar Reddy: A former Air Force pilot and a six-time MLA, Reddy has served as the TPCC chief for six years, from February 2015 to June 2021. He has previously served as the housing minister in N Kiran Kumar Reddy’s cabinet.
- Komatireddy Venkat Reddy: He has been elected as an MLA from Nalgonda five times and has prior experience in the role — he had served as the Information Technology minister in late Dr Y S Rajashekara Reddy’s Cabinet.
- Ponnam Prabhakar: Prabhakar is a long-time Congress party worker and the working president of Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee.
- Dansari Anasuya: Anasuya has a strong history of activism before she entered politics. She joined the Janashakti Naxal group when she was 14 and went on to train as a lawyer. She was with the TDP before joining the Congress party in 2017.
- C Damodar Raja Narasimha: Narasimha has previously served as the deputy chief minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh and as a higher education and agriculture minister.
- D Sridhar Babu: A senior state party leader and AICC secretary, Sridhar Babu was the minister for higher education and NRI affairs, and minister of civil supplies in the undivided Andhra Pradesh government.
- Thummala Nageshwara Rao: Nageshwara Rao has worked with three famed CMs — N T Rama Rao, N Chandrababu Naidu, and K Chandrashekar Rao. He was associated with the TDP (which was recently named BRS) until the 2023 elections, prior to which he joined Congress.
- Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy: He joined Congress ahead of the 2023 elections after he was suspended from BRS for anti-party activities.
- Konda Surekha: She has previously served as the women’s and children’s welfare minister in Y S Rajashekar Reddy’s ministry. She has been associated with YSRCP and BRS in the past decade before joining Congress in 2018.
- Jupally Krishna Rao: Rao joined Congress ahead of the state polls in 2023. He has previously served as a minister in the Cabinets of Dr Y S Rajashekar Reddy and N Kiran Kumar Reddy.
