On Wednesday, the Opposition members walked out of the House, following the passage of the Bills, over Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remark on former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. During the debate, Shah had said, “Jammu and Kashmir has suffered due to two blunders committed by Prime Minister Nehru – first, by announcing ceasefire, and then taking Kashmir issue to the United Nations… Had Jawaharlal Nehru taken right steps, Pakistan-occupied Kashmir would have been part of India now. It was a historic blunder.”
Criticising the BJP for picking on Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru over the issue of Kashmir, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury Wednesday accused the ruling party of treating India’s first Prime Minister as a “whipping boy”.
Participating in the Lok Sabha discussion on the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill, 2023, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation(Amendment) Bill, 2023, Chowdhury said, I am very surprised that former Law Minister Ravi Shankarji, another (former) Law Minister Kiren Rijijuji, and another minister talk about Nehruji on every issue in the House and criticise Nehruji… Whenever we ask anything, everyone speaks about Nehru.”
“We are tired of hearing 70 years, 70 years (the BJP line to attack the Congress rule). I would request Amit Shahji and all ministers that one day an open discussion should be held in this House about Kashmir, Nehru and his mistakes. I challenge you,” he said.
