Inspector Masroor Ahmad Wani, a Jammu and Kashmir Police officer, succumbed to his injuries on Thursday, more than a month after he was shot in Srinagar’s Eidgah area. Wani was shot by militants while playing cricket at the Eidgah grounds on October 29, a Sunday afternoon, leaving him critically injured. He died at AIIMS, New Delhi.
“Today, we mourn the loss of police inspector Masroor Ahmad Wani, a courageous officer who valiantly served amidst the looming threat of terrorism. His sacrifice embodies the harsh reality our J&K policemen face, dedicating their lives to shield our communities from the shadows of terrorism,” J&K’s Director General of Police R R Swain said
Swain said this tragic incident “strengthens our resolve at the J&K Police to redouble our efforts in combating terrorism”.
Sources told The Indian Express that the investigation has been handed over to the National Investigation Agency.
Wani (37) served in the J&K Police for over 12 years and was posted in various districts of North, South and Central Kashmir. He was married in 2021 and had a child on the way. His father also served in the J&K Police.
Former J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said Wani “put up a very brave fight after being injured when he was fired upon by militants in Srinagar recently while he was playing cricket with boys in his neighbourhood”.
People’s Conference president Sajad Lone also offered condolences to the family.
After Wani was shot, he was taken to the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) for treatment, where doctors operated on him. Hospital sources had told The Indian Express that the inspector was hit in his lungs and head.
The attack on Wani was the first such attack on a security force personnel in Srinagar this year.
