A woman in Karnataka’s Belagavi was allegedly assaulted, paraded naked and tied to an electric pole after her son eloped with a girl, whose engagement was fixed to someone else, police said on Monday. Following the incident, the girl’s family attacked the boy’s house in the new Vantamuri village and vandalised it.

Afterwards, the attackers then dragged the boy’s mother away, allegedly paraded her naked and tied her to an electricity pole. Upon being notified, police rushed to the spot and set the victim free. At least seven people have been arrested in connection with the case and an investigation is underway. Additional forces have also been deployed in the area to avoid any untoward incidents.

According to Belagavi Police Commissioner Siddramappa, 24-year-old Ashok and 18-year-old Priyanka belonging to the same community and village fell in love. They eloped from the village sometime around noon on Monday. When the girl’s family learned of the incident, they attacked the boy’s house and assaulted his mother.

“On getting the information at 4 am, our Police Sub Inspector visited the village, followed by other senior officials, and seven people have been arrested,” Siddramappa said.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah commented on the “inhuman” incident and assured that “strict action” will be taken against the perpetrators.

“This has made the whole society bow their head in shame. Our government will not tolerate such heinous acts for any reason. Several people have already been arrested in connection with the case. It is our full responsibility to provide justice to the aggrieved family by taking action to ensure that the culprits are punished severely,” Siddaramaiah said in an X post.

Home Minister G Parameshwara visited the area and said, “Those responsible…seven people have been arrested and will be produced before the court….efforts are on track to get the couple who have gone away back. This is truly a shameful incident. The Home Minister further assured that action is being taken by the police following the law.

BJP leader Shobha Karandjale expressed “shock” over the incident and requested “stringent legal action” against the culprits.

“Deeply shocked by the horrifying incident in Vantamuri village, Belgaum district, where a woman’s dignity was robbed in the worst possible way. Immediate and stringent legal action is needed against the culprits. I urge the govt to set up special courts to handle such cases swiftly,” Karandjale said in an X post.
