Pakistan cricketer Naseem Shah, who missed the recently-concluded Cricket World Cup in India, due to a shoulder injury has begun the ‘final stage’ of his rehabilitation process, the Pakistan Cricket Board announced in a press release late on Wednesday.
The fast bowler is currently undergoing his rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore, under the care of a strength and conditioning coach, a physiotherapist and a doctor.
PCB said that Naseem has been doing light gym exercises and partial bowling practice so far. The board’s press release added that he will start batting from Thursday.
The young pacer had picked up an injury to his shoulder during the Asia Cup in September, which required him to undergo surgery in the United Kingdom. He consequently missed the entire World Cup in India, where Pakistan were dumped out in the group stage itself in a calamitous showing.
After the surgery, Naseem remained in the UK for two months for rehabilitation and initial training, where he received continuous care from a team of expert medical staff.
Naseem made his Pakistan debut in Brisbane against Australia at the age of 16. It didn’t take long for him to leave his mark: in his second match, he became the youngest fast bowler in Test history to take a five-wicket haul, getting to the record against Sri Lanka in Karachi.
In his third Test, against Bangladesh, he then made another record: Naseem became the youngest to take a Test match hat-trick.
His absence from the Pakistan team was a blow to the team at the recent Cricket World Cup. He was an integral part of Pakistan think tank’s plans of a fast-bowling troika along with Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf.
Long injury-enforced layoffs have meant he has spent plenty of time away from the sport. He has currently played in 17 Tests (51 wickets), 14 ODIs (32) and 19 T20Is (15).
