A 42-year-old woman was stripped naked, paraded and assaulted after being tied to an electric pole early on Monday in Karnataka’s Belagavi district after her son eloped with a woman, police said, adding that they had arrested seven people in connection with the incident.
The police said the incident took place between 1 am and 3 am in Hosa Vantamuri village, 9 km from Belagavi city, where a legislature session is underway.
“The victim’s 24-year-old son has been in a relationship with an 18-year-old woman, but her family arranged her marriage with another man. The couple ran away before the engagement ceremony scheduled for Monday,” a police officer said.
The police said that efforts were underway to locate the couple who have eloped.
Relatives of the woman allegedly attacked her boyfriend’s mother at their home. They paraded her naked and tied her to an electric pole before assaulting her, according to the Kakati police. The victim was shifted to a Belagavi hospital for treatment.
Home Minister G Parameshwara visited the village and said it was an inhumane act and that strict action would be taken against the culprits.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also said it was an inhumane act and a shame to society. “Our government will not tolerate such incidents and many people have been arrested. It will be our responsibility to provide justice to the victim’s family,” he added.
