A DAY after a person hurled a slipper at BJP MLC Gopichand Padalkar after a rally in Indapur demanding OBC reservation, Pune Rural Police have booked 10 persons who were part of Maratha reservation relay fast that was being observed in the same area.
The incident took place around 5.30 pm on December 9 on the open ground near Indapur municipal council. During noon that day, a rally demanding OBC reservation was held under the leadership of Chhagan Bhujbal.
At some distance from this rally, a relay fast was held for the demand of Maratha reservation. Officials said a barricade was put up dividing the areas where the two activities were being held.
“After the OBC reservation rally was over, Padalkar was walking over to meet people when a few persons from the group participating in the relay fast blocked his way. They began chanting slogans ‘Go back! Go back!’ As Padalkar was leaving the place, someone hurled a slipper at him. He was then quickly escorted away by the police team,” said an officer from Indapur police station.
Late on Sunday an offence was registered at Indapur police station against 10 persons who were part of the relay fast. Police have invoked sections related to wrongful restraint, actions endangering personal safety of others and rioting. No arrests have been made in the case as on Monday night and the process to identify suspects was on, the officer said.
In a video statement released from the account on X (formerly Twitter) Padalkar said, “Maharashtra’s OBC community has been peacefully demanding reservation through Maha Elgar rallies. At one such rally, some coward attacked me. We have also supported the cause of reservation for the economically weaker section of Marathas. But the violence during rallies for Maratha quota suggests that some antisocial elements have infiltrated this cause. The purpose of these anti-social elements is not reservation, but to disrupt peace and harmony in the state.”
