The Delhi Police on Wednesday arrested six people for allegedly supplying drugs from Manipur, Uttar Pradesh, and Thailand to college students in the Capital and nearby areas through social media and delivery apps.
According to the police, they received a tip-off about a drug syndicate in the Northeast region engaged in supplying high-quality ganja, which was being transported from Manipur and Shillong by rail, and organic ganja being brought from Phuket in Thailand by air.
A police team was formed and the accused, Nongamaitham Jashobanta Singh and Rudransh Gupta, were arrested and found to have 45 kg of ganja. During the probe, the accused told investigators they transported ganja from Manipur to Dimapur by road and then by train to Delhi and organic ganja through flight.
“They further disclosed that they supplied ganja to one of their associates, Rudransh Gupta, and at the instance of accused Nongamaitham, co-associate Gupta was arrested and 2.78 ganja was recovered from his house,” said Ravindra Yadav, Special Commissioner of Police (Crime).
The police said Gupta disclosed during questioning that he had been involved in drug trafficking for the last two years and he took delivery of ganja from Nongamaitham, who belongs to Mizoram. Nongamaitham used to transport ganja from Manipur and organic ganja from Thailand.
Gupta was in touch with his clients through social media platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook at various universities. “He took orders from his clients on these platforms and delivered through delivery services like Porter… He took his money through UPI,” said Yadav.
Three more people, identified as Lakshay Bhatia, Girik Aggarwal, and Khalid Zafar, were also arrested.
During interrogation, Bhatia disclosed that he allegedly supplied drugs to students of a university along with his associate Agrawal, who is a third-year college student. At the instance of Bhatia, Agrawal was arrested. He further disclosed that whenever he needed drugs, he collected them from Zafar in Kanpur, UP.
Zafar and Bhatia met each other at a university in Noida. The police said Bhatia allegedly used to supply drugs to students of that university and other colleges for the last three years and used to procure it through Zafar.
