Two brothers, both farmers in their late 50s, were killed in a hit-and-run incident in Daund taluka on the Pune-Solapur highway after an unidentified car knocked them down as they were crossing the road on Sunday evening.
The accident took place around 6.30 pm in Kedgaon village, around 60 km from Pune city. The police identified the deceased as Kailas Dattatrat Shelke, 58, and Pandurang Dattatray Shelke, 56, residents of the Gahinathpathar area in Kedgaon.
Inspector Hemant Shedge, in-charge of Yawat police station, said, “Around 6.30 pm on Sunday, the brothers were hit by an unidentified vehicle when crossing the Pune-Solapur highway and were fatally injured. We have launched a probe to identify and arrest the driver who fled after the accident.”
An FIR was registered soon after based on a complaint by the victims’ nephew Rajendra Jaisingh Shelke.
After the accident, some local residents rushed the two men to a hospital where they were declared dead due to multiple grievous injuries. “Initial investigation suggests that the vehicle that hit them was a car. We have launched a probe to identify the car and arrest the driver,” said Assistant Inspector Sandesh Bavkar, who is investigating the case.
The police said Kailas is survived by his wife, son and daughter, while Pandurang leaves behind his wife, two sons and daughter.
