An Assistant Sub-Inspector in Chhota Udepur has been arrested for allegedly killing his wife by stabbing her more than 25 times for questioning his ‘extramarital relationship with a colleague’.
Varsan Rathwa, attached to the district police headquarters, was arrested Wednesday for allegedly stabbing to death his wife, Kedi Rathwa, on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday. According to the FIR lodged based on a complaint filed by Kedi’s brother Versinh Rathwa, Varsan had dropped off Kedi at her maternal home on Monday evening.
“Varsan arrived at our home Monday and left my sister stating she was refusing to stay with him at their home… My sister was distraught and left the house after Varsan left. When I went after her, she refused to come back home or even go back to her own house… She said she wanted to visit a temple and I dropped her off mid-way as she told me to leave saying she would return to her home,” the complaint reads.
The FIR states that the complainant later received a phone call from Varsan’s number by a “third person” who informed the family that Kedi’s body was found near Godariya village. The complainant stated that upon reaching the spot, he saw his “sister’s blood soaked body that had been inflicted with multiple stab wounds on the stomach, hands and neck”.
The FIR states that when the complainant confronted the accused on a phone call, after initially denying the crime, Varsan allegedly said, “I have killed your sister and thrown her body in a jungle. Do what you can”.
According to Versinh, the couple was married for 12 years and has a daughter and son aged nine and seven respectively. “For the past year, my brother-in-law was in a relationship with his colleague and they began living together. He even took away the two children from my sister and kept them with his paramour in their new house. My sister and Varsan had frequent arguments over this and he finally decided to kill her to remove the obstruction in his life with his paramour,” Versinh said.
Chhota Udepur Police Inspector Arun Parmar said a forest beat guard had discovered Kedi’s body in the forest area near Piplaj village and tipped off the police. “The beat guard had called the police and when we reached the spot, we retrieved the body of the deceased, who is about 30 years of age… She had about 25 to 30 stab wounds in the stomach, hands and neck… We circulated the photograph in the police groups. Varsan told us that it was the body of his wife… When we called him for questioning, he confessed to the murder. He has been booked for murder under Indian Penal Code Section 302,” Parmar said.
