Jhelum Stadium in J&K’s Baramulla Named After General Bipin Rawat

The Jammu and Kashmir government on Friday renamed Jhelum Stadium located in Janbazpora area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district after former chief of defence staff General Bipin Rawat.

The stadium was renamed as ‘General Bipin Rawat Stadium’ on the second death anniversary of the country’s first CDS.

Gen Rawat served as GoC Dagger Division in Baramulla during his Kashmir posting. He was also the commander of 5 Sector RR and his two tenures were close to his heart.

“Sanction is hereby accorded to the naming of Jhelum Stadium, Janbazpora, Baramulla as ‘General Bipin Rawat Stadium,’” an order by Commissioner/Secretary to the Government read.

The government has directed Youth Services and Sports Department and Deputy Commissioner, Baramulla to shall take immediate necessary steps including amending their records for effecting the change.

In the order, the government has asked the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir to ensure that an appropriate event should be organized in connection with naming of the stadium.

“It is further ordered that Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir shall ensure that an appropriate event is organized in connection with naming of the stadium,” it read.

Bipin during his tenure had gained confidence of locals including young and old. After his death in a chopper crash, many in Baramulla had paid tribute to him and remembered his work for the people of Baramulla.

“We are happy that the Stadium has been named after Bipin Rawat. He connects to Baramulla like no other and he would always be ready to help us,” Basharat, a local of Baramulla, said.
