Mumbai police Sunday night arrested a builder who allegedly cheated a person by promising him a house and taking Rs 46 lakh for the same. The accused Niraj Mansukhlal Ved, who has nearly 10 FIRs against him, will be produced before the court on Monday.

The latest FIR is based on a complaint by a home buyer who said he had paid Rs 46 lakh to Ved as down payment for a flat in a building that he was constructing. The complainant told the police that the accused had promised him that a building would be constructed in Ghatkopar in three years, and that he had purchased a flat measuring 1,620 sq ft for Rs 3.31 crore.

The victim said the builder did not provide him any document in connection with the construction and no building came up over the next three years. When he asked Ved to refund the money, he was promised that it would be returned with interest.

However, when Ved kept delaying the payment, the victim approached the local Pant Nagar police station in Ghatkopar (East) and gave a written complaint. Based on this, the local police registered an FIR on charges of cheating.

Senior Inspector Rajesh Kewale of Pant Nagar police station said the case was registered nearly six months ago. “The accused had been missing. He was eventually tracked down on Sunday and placed under arrest.”

Festive offer

An officer said Ved has been named in several FIRs including at Bhandup, Vikhroli, Tilak Nagar and Ghatkopar police stations. In three of these cases, he has been named as a wanted accused. Last year, the Mumbai Police Economic Offences Wing (EOW) arrested him in connection with a cheating case.
