The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) observed a black day on Monday in Tripura and other Northeast states in protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act.
“No foreign nationals should get citizenship and stay here permanently. So the NESO, comprising eight organisations, is protesting against the CAA. We demand the Act should be withdrawn,” NESO former vice-president Upendra Debbarma said.
The eight member organisations of the NESO are the All Assam Students’ Union, Khasi Students’ Union, Garo Students’ Union, All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union, Naga Students’ Federation, All Manipur Students’ Union, Mizo Zirlai Pawl and the Aizawl Twipra Students’ Federation.
As part of the protest, the Twipra Students’ Federation demonstrated with black flags in front of the Gandhi statue at Circuit House in Agartala and raised anti-CAA slogans.
The NESO has been marking December 11 as a black day since Parliament passed the Citizens Amendment Bill on that date in 2019.
Last year, the organisation held its sixth general conference at Khumulwng, headquarters of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council. It then said that illegal immigration from neighbouring Bangladesh was a threat to the nation and that the organisation would stand with the indigenous people of Tripura in their demand for a “special constitutional safeguard” for a state with “vast federal authority”.
