With the wedding season in full swing, the Delhi Police have trained the guns on criminals, mainly the youth in their 20s and juveniles, who enter high-profile weddings by dressing up well, camouflaging themselves and making off with valuable items and gifts at the venue.

Senior crime branch officials said they have increased police control room van presence in and around farmhouses in Chattarpur and other banquet halls across Delhi in view of such incidents coming to the fore. “Last year, we arrested gangs of wedding thieves who used to enter venues by dressing up well and target valuable items kept unattended. CCTV cameras of the venue were scanned, and the gang members, who mostly operate in pairs to avoid suspicion and include mostly juveniles, were apprehended,” said an officer.

Officers said these thieves identify themselves as Band Baaja Baarat gang and mostly take away jewellery, gifts and cash.

Another officer said, “Gang members mostly hail from the Rajgarh district of Madhya Pradesh, most of whom are into wedding theft and are recruited every year for carrying out the crime in metropolitan cities. We have not received any case so far but are in touch with wedding organisers regarding overall security and CCTV arrangements at banquet halls”.

“Though the responsibility of hiring extra private security lies with the client who communicates the same to the organiser, we are searching dossiers or adult accused people previously held and now out on bail who can take to the crime again,” said another officer.
