Tamil star Vijay has joined the chorus of celebrities speaking up about the Chennai floods, caused by Cyclone Michaung. The actor, in an Instagram post, noted that people are still suffering without basic facilities. He directed his Vijay Makkal Iyakkam members to work with the government to help people.
He wrote, “In Chennai and its suburbs, due to Cyclone Michaung, from children to elders, many are severely affected. Reports suggest thousands are suffering without drinking water, food, and other basic facilities. Many voices on social media continue to request help to retrieve people stuck in the flood. In such a situation, I request members of the organisation (Vijay Makkal Iyakkam) to work with the government selflessly to help people.”
Over the past few months, it has been speculated that Vijay is gearing up to enter politics, and this statement was seen by many as another indication of his political ambitions. Many Tamil actors have come forward to help those affected by the floods. Actor Harish Kalyan of Pyaar Prema Kaadhal donated Rs 1 lakh to the Chennai corporation for relief activities. Meanwhile, actors such as Aditi Balan and Vinodhini Vaidhyanathan have lashed out at the Tamil Nadu government for failing to implement proper infrastructure to handle the flood.
The city is still struggling to recover from the impact. 15 trains have been canceled by the Southern Railways till now. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is visiting Chennai tomorrow to assess the situation.
Meanwhile, Vijay is currently working on his next project, tentatively titled Thalapathy 68. Directed by Venkat Prabhu, a long shooting schedule of the film was recently wrapped up in Thailand.
