Education and providing health services are basic responsibilities of a government, and a dispensation that cannot run schools cannot run a government, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said at the inauguration of an auditorium at the Delhi government’s School of Specialised Excellence at Raj Niwas Marg on Monday.

“Our ideology is that if we want to change the country…to empower people, education is the biggest weapon. A country that cannot give good education to the people cannot progress. The work that should have happened in 75 years is now beginning to happen,” Kejriwal said.

“This journey of setting education right will hopefully spread…now other governments have also begun to say that this needs to be changed. Now no government, party can say that this cannot happen. Earlier, governments used to say the government cannot run schools. We have shown that the government can run schools. If a government cannot run schools, how can it run the government? Schools, providing health services…these are basic responsibilities of a government. Otherwise, why are taxes being paid? They are being paid for good education, health, electricity…,” he added.

Referring to education as the Delhi government’s “most important priority sector,” Kejriwal said that there had been a tendency to privatise education in the country, adding “those who have money would get educated, and those who don’t have money would not get educated.”

He further said, “For quality education, people needed to pay money. This, we have changed in the past eight years…”

Festive offer

He said, “This auditorium is not just about four walls. The infrastructure, facilities that have been created in government schools are not available even in the best private schools…the city’s government schools are among the best in the country…We have started this transformation in Punjab as well.”
