Several women MPs of the Trinamool Congress Wednesday staged a protest at the Parliament complex against Union Ministster Giriraj Singh’s “misogynistic” remarks targeting West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The TMC leaders, including Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra, stood in front of the Parliament’s landmark Mahatma Gandhi statue carrying placards demanding that Singh be expelled.

Speaking during an interview, the rural development minister had commented on West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee dancing with Bollywood celebrities during the 29th edition of the Kolkata International Film Festival:“Jashn mana rahi hai, thumke laga rahi hai, yeh uchit nahi hai. (She is celebrating and dancing, this is inappropriate).”

Calling Giriraj Singh “shameless”, Moitra on Wednesday told news agency ANI: “BJP Government and BJP ministers are all misogynist and patriarchal, and they dislike women…He should apologise but he is so shameless that he won’t…”

The same day,  TMC Rajya Sabha member Santanu Sen raised the issue in the House during a debate on the economic situation in the country. “I would like to strongly protest the pose and posture of one of our Cabinet ministers targeting the only lady chief minister of the country. I can show you the video if you want. It should be noted,” he said.
