Zoya Akhtar’s directorial The Archies, which marks the debut of star kids Suhana Khan, Khushi Kapoor and Agastya Nanda, premiered on Netflix on Thursday. Zoya’s brother Farhan Akhtar and father Javed Akhtar have also made substantial contributions to Zoya’s directorial. While Javed wrote the lyrics of the album, the Hindi dialogues of the film came from Farhan.
Speaking about working with her brother, Zoya told News18, “The Hindi dialogues came from Farhan. He took a blueprint and made it into his syntax and the syntax of that particular language and the simplicity of the Archie comics. Getting the corniness and humour of the comics was tough but he brought that out really well. He was the one who introduced the phrase ‘Va Va Voom’ from the comics into the song.”
Zoya also talked about her father Javed Akhtar’s versatility as a writer. She said, “He can write lyrics for a film like a Lagaan and a Rock On, and that’s the beauty. Having said that, it was a bit tough brief. It’s sometimes very tough to be simple. We needed the lyrics to sound like 1960s’ teenage voice. It needed to be Anglo-Indian and so, it couldn’t be very heavy on Urdu or Hindi language. It had to be simple, communicative and conversation-like and fit into a rock-and-roll meter.”
During the interview, Zoya Akhtar revealed that Javed Akhtar told her that he had to forget 85 percent of his vocabulary to write the lyrics of the album. She also shared that on certain songs he collaborated with Aditi Saigal, also known by her stage name DOT. Aditi, who’s a musician in her early twenties, also plays a lead role in The Archies. “He wrote the Hindi lines and she wrote the English ones. I think it worked out really well,” Zoya said.
Zoya Akhtar started as an assistant director on Farhan Akhtar’s first two films – Dil Chahta Hai and Lakshya. She made her directorial debut with Luck By Chance, which starred Farhan in the lead role. Though the film didn’t do well at the box office, it received glorious reviews from critics. In her career, Zoya has been associated with many critically acclaimed movies like Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Talaash: The Answer Lies Within, Gully Boy and Dil Dhadakne Do.
