Maharashtra assembly speaker Rahul Narwekar said that he would need to put in extra hours to conduct hearings on disqualification petitions while ensuring smooth functioning of the House. “I need to ensure the smooth functioning of the legislative assembly as well as complete the disqualification hearings pending before me. It looks like I will be working from 9 am to 10 pm in this period to give justice to both responsibilities,” he said.
In other news from the state, former member of Maharashtra State Backward Class Commission (MSBCC) Balaji Killarikar, who resigned recently, citing the “biased” and “agenda-driven” functioning of the panel, has now demanded the resignation of its chairperson Justice (retired) Anand Nirgude. Another member who stepped down, Laxman Hake, also pointed towards the growing “interference” from the government as the reason for his resignation.
Meanwhile, a day after Uddhav Thackeray announced that he would lead a protest march to the Adani group’s office in Mumbai on December 16 over the Dharavi Redevelopment project, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis termed the Sena UBT chief “anti-development” and said that he was trying to prevent poor people from getting houses.
