AUS vs PAK: Michael Vaughan bats for ‘aggressive’ Mitchell Marsh as replacement for David Warner

Australia opener David Warner is set to retire from red-ball cricket after the Test series against Australia. With Australia needing a replacement for Warner, former England cricketer Michael Vaughan has backed Mitchell Marsh to take over the spot.

Back-up Australian openers have not done well in the past three years in Test cricket. Cameron Bancroft and Matt Renshaw have not been able to settle their plays in the line-up despite the ageing Australian openers.

Speaking to Fox Sports during the tour match between PM XI and Pakistan, Vaughan said that he would back Mitchell Marsh to take over the spot from Warner. Marsh has never opened in Test cricket and generally plays an aggressive role in the middle-order. The batter found huge success in white-ball formats after he was promoted to the top-order a few years back.

“I would honestly look at someone like Mitchell Marsh to open the batting because it gets him in the team â€æ he’s a right-hander and he might go down the aggressive route,” Vaughan told Fox Cricket.

“Everyone else who has been here opening the batting for Australia in the last few series has struggled, so why not try something a bit different?” he further added.

Former Australia cricketer and one of the best fast bowlers of his generation – Brett Lee – did not like the opinion of Vaughan and said that he was against the idea of promoting a middle-order batter. Lee argued that the opening position was for a specialist’s role and it should be left to them.

“I think when it comes to Test cricket though, I’d probably rather see a specialist in that area, especially if the ball is nipping around,” Lee said.

“If you’re not used to the red ball nipping around, seaming around, if you’ve never done that as a job that’s the only thing that scares me. I’m not saying it can’t be done, of course,” Lee further added.
