A Delhi court Monday allowed Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh, who has been in custody since October in connection with the Delhi excise policy case, to physically appear in proceedings of the privileges committee in Rajya Sabha for four matters against him pending before the committee.

While Special Judge MK Nagpal granted permission for Singh to appear before the committee, he was not allowed to meet his colleagues, supporters, and media persons. Singh was earlier directed to appear before the committee but was arrested in October.

The Jail Superintendent was directed by the court to take Singh on any working day this week when the Rajya Sabha is in session so he can file his submissions before the committee. Judge Nagpal also extended Singh’s custody till December 21.

Singh was arrested on October 4 following 10 hours of searches at his North Avenue home. He was the third AAP leader to be arrested in the case, after former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and the party’s communications in-charge Vijay Nair. While arresting Singh, the ED alleged he had ensured changes were made in the liquor policy through Sisodia to favour certain businessmen.

Calling Singh a “key conspirator”, the ED had said in its remand application, “Sanjay Singh has exploited and gained illegal money/kickbacks, which is ‘proceeds of crime’ generated from the liquor policy (2021-22) scam…(he) has been part of the conspiracy of collecting kickbacks from liquor groups… (he) has a close relationship with Dinesh Arora (accused turned approver in the case) since 2017 as revealed by Dinesh Arora as well as from his call records.”
