Karan Johar hosted Vicky Kaushal and Kiara Advani on this week’s episode of Koffee with Karan, and during the episode, Karan recalled an incident when he left a date midway because he couldn’t sit through an opera. Karan said that the person he was on a date with was “very hot,” which is why he agreed to go on the date in the first place.

Karan shared, “I was actually on a date once, way back. The person asked if I’d go tot he opera. The person was very hot. I was like, yes. I went to this opera, and by interval, I was like, no matter how hot they are, I can’t put up with this.” As Vicky sang an alaap from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, and said that Karan perhaps missed this, Karan joined in and said, “I missed my alaaps. They were screeching from the top of their lungs. No disrespect for opera lovers, it’s a beautiful art form, it’s just not for me.” Karan said that he left during the interval and never saw that person again. “We never met again,” he said and added, “I was cancelled for being fraudulent.”

Karan asked Kiara and Vicky if they’ve ever faked interest in subjects just to impress their partners, and Vicky spoke about Katrina’s love for art, and how he started to learn about it in the last few years. Karan shared an anecdote from 22 years ago, and recalled that back in 2001, he “suddenly decided that I must become an art connoisseur for no reason.”

He shared, “Not that I knew anything, but I knew that Raza was a huge artist at that time. He was a big brand at that time. My father was a very simple man and I asked him for Rs 5 lakh to buy an artwork from Raza. And he was like ‘Rs 5 lakh? There’s art for Rs 5 lakh?’” Karan described the artwork, and revealed how his father reacted to it. “My father has said, and I don’t want to say exactly what he said and he said it in Punjabi. But he said, ‘Yeh toh setting vale bhi kar skate hain, iske maine Rs 5 lakh kyu diye (Even set designers could’ve made this, why have I paid Rs 5 lakh for this)?”

Festive offer

Karan said that he misses his father, as he would have been shocked to know that the artwork is valued at 50 times its original price now. Karan’s father Yash Johar passed away in 2004.
