In an interesting rebound over the weekend, Vicky Kaushal-starrer Sam Bahadur showed increased traction, collecting Rs 7.50 crore on Sunday, bringing its total domestic earnings to Rs 56.55 crore, according to early estimates by industry tracker Sacnilk.
Sam Bahadur’s box office collection on day 10 of its release shows that people are lining up to watch the film based on life of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw. The film faced a sluggish start at the box office, contending with the simultaneous release of Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal. Despite the initial competition, Sam Bahadur managed to maintain a steady pace throughout its first week. It witnessed a significant 92.86 percent surge in collections on its second Saturday, amassing Rs 6.75 crore, followed by another Rs 7.50 crore on Sunday, with a Hindi occupancy rate of 64.09 percent. The global collection for the Meghna Gulzar directorial now stands at Rs 66.4 crore.
Receiving generally positive reviews from critics, Sam Bahadur grappled with the gigantic success of Animal, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga. Animal, despite facing criticism from different corners for glorifying toxic masculinity, has proven unstoppable at the box office, earning an impressive Rs 432.27 crore in India, with a global collection reaching Rs 660 crore.
Sam Bahadur unfolds as a biopic portraying the life of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, celebrated as one of independent India’s greatest soldiers. Alongside Vicky Kaushal, the film features Sanya Malhotra as Vicky’s wife and Fatima Sana Sheikh portraying former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
The film garnered mixed reviews, with Indian Express’s Shubra Gupta awarding it 2.5 stars. She wrote, “Net net, ‘Sam Bahadur’ pans out like a series of snapshots where information is handed out to us, much more tell than show. The writing is flat even when it tries to amp up the excitement in scenes which are inherently exciting. Take, for example, a running thread which features an irascible factotum who has clearly endeared himself to the big man. The first time we see the former twiddle the knob on his beat-up radio, muttering under his breath, we are amused. A repetition in the same vein is just not as funny.”
